Dear Family and Friends:
I was prompted to start this blog by an article I read in Time magazine in early September. The article talked about a NYU freshman and his quest to graduate without excessive student debt. Please click here to read more.
With my recently created site, I wish to keep my family and friends updated with my development through university. Also, I am in need of financial assistance to help get me through the four year degree program.
A little about myself:
Just like the majority of seniors in high school, I have a desire to carve out a career in an area of interest I love. My passion is…SPORTS. I have played competitive basketball all through high school both for my school team and on a highly competitive provincial level. Aside from my attraction to basketball, I heavily follow college and professional football and constantly blog about it. You can visit my football for days blogspot here. Not only do I take my sports seriously, I am on the academic honor roll in my high school and coach basketball for our local house league team.
It is with an intention of successful and honorable completion that I am applying to a few selected universities in the State of Florida. Ahh! I have decided to move from Ontario, Canada to Florida, USA in order to attend university. If you know me, the reason for the move is not too far-fetched. Not only is the warm climate of the Sunshine State appealing to me, but also the simple reality that the universities I am looking at offer internships with reputable teams that can ultimately lead to a job upon graduation in precisely the career I have selected.
I have chosen to pursue a degree in Sports Management. Sports Management is a field of study preparing students to work in the sport industry and to produce, promote, organize and facilitate sport events, services and products. Yippee!
My primary choice is Northwood University in West Palm Beach, Florida. The reason that I have chosen a private university is personal and simple. First, the program is exactly what I am looking for (read more here) with a dual major (sports management & business management) and adding the fact that it has received national approval from the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation as only one of 53 schools in the United States for its Entertainment Sport Promotion Management (ESPM). Also, I have been in contact with the Program Chair and he has given me all the information regarding the internship programs available to me. Some other reasons I have opted to attend a private university are: smaller classrooms; direct interaction with professors; like-minded classmates; greater ease of getting into my chosen courses; and being on tract to graduate within my four-year timeframe.
The curriculum for the four-year program is here and the annual cost of my education is estimated at $18,000, you may note the 2008-2009 cost of education by clicking here.
This summer I took the SAT and scored 1020, but needed 1150 or better to get a scholarship, so this Fall I decided to take it again, Whew! I scored 1170! Yea! This will qualify me for a potential scholarship of $2500.00. Cool! I also intend to work part-time during the university year and summer as much as possible to offset the costs of tuition.
This is where you kick in:
As you have heard, tightening payouts for higher education have placed enormous stress on upcoming freshmen. This situation challenged me to think creatively about financing my full-time four-year term and led me to the creation of this blog. $$$
I invite you to track and interact with me throughout my journey to a fulfilling career. :)
